You're waiting for a train...

This is an Inception AU Meme

The rules are quite simple:

Step 1: Comment with your character's name/fandom in the title line, and their position in the Inception-verse in the body, or tag into someone who's already posted, whatever, you know how these work and I'm not the boss of you.

Step 1a: Positions and descriptions are as follows:

Architect: The Architect is the one who builds the dream locations, whether it's a mock up of a real place, or somewhere completely from scratch, it's their job to make sure that the mark doesn't know that their environment isn't real

Chemist: The Chemist is the one who supplies the Somnacin, the dream-machine drug, whether they mix their own or get it from a reputable distributor. Generally the one who keeps an eye on the sleepers topside.

Extractor: The Extractor is the person who does most of the intensive work, they're the ones who actually collect the information from the mark within the dream, whether it's by talking it out of them or breaking into their safe to get it and everything between.

Forger: The Forger is something of a wild card, Forgers can change their appearance in a dream, this is not a skill most people have, appearing only as themselves. Generally it's a Forger's job to take on the appearance of someone close to the mark, get the information needed from them as smoothly as possible.

Mark: The Mark is the person who has the information that the extraction team is after. Rich businessman, government drone who's been embezzling from the company coffers, cheating spouse, you name it. Someone's paid big money to get the information you have.

Point: The Point is the one who pulls all the information together, on the mark and on teammates, it's up to them to make sure the job goes as smoothly as possible, the person whose contingency plans have contingency plans.

Tourist: The Tourist is someone who's just along for the ride, whether they're the one who's paying for the extraction and they're along to protect their investment, or whether they're someone's clingy S.O., they shouldn't be there because they aren't trained, but circumstances have thrown them in as well.

Shade: The Shade is a memory of someone, lodged in the back of one of the team's minds. Not always malevolent, but sometimes so, they may be dead, they may be otherwise lost, but the Shade is a person who only exists in dreams.

(of course, if you already play someone from Inception, you can change their title or stick with the canon one, it's up to you!)

Step 2: Tag around with one of the following scenarios (or make up your own, again, you know how these work and I'm not the boss of you)

Planning stages: This is the part where the whole thing looks a bit like Oceans Eleven, getting the team together, making sure everyone's available, pinning down a timeline, setting up surveillance of the mark and so on. Maybe there's even a corkboard with pictures and strings on it!

Practice run: Now the job is well underway and testing is required to make sure everyone knows what they're supposed to be doing and when, this is also when plans get finalized, and is the best time to weed out any potential problems.

On the job: It's go time! Hopefully everyone knows their part and nobody's going to crash the party. But of course it can't be that easy, can it?

After the job: Well the job's over, was it a success? A failure? Did everyone survive or did someone get left behind with their brain leaking out their ears? Is it time to celebrate or time to cut and run? Is it somehow all of the above???

Wildcard Option: This is the 'whatever the hell we want to do' option, practicing without an actual job to practice for? Using the dreamscape to play out video game scenarios and/or scenes from your favorite books? Working out your murderous urges via dreamscape? Go for it! This is the option for all that and everything else.

Step 3: Have fun!

This man is definitely a Point, he knows things that it's best not to ask how he knows them. Though he's probably taken a level in Forger, and has definitely done double-duty as Point and Extractor before.

He prefers being an Architect, but he's a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to dreamsharing, the only thing he doesn't do is Chemistry.

Okay so she's probably a Shade, but I could also see her as being a Forger, since she's so used to being what people expect to see when they look at her, she could easily have made a whole career of it.

Canonically he's a Point, but I'm pretty sure he's run Extractor before, as well as Architect, Mr. Penrose Staircase over here.

She's definitely a Chemist, but she's also a fair Architect when needed.

On the one hand making the drug dealer a Chemist seems cliché, even if it does, surprisingly actually fit his character. But on the other hand: consider him as an Architect, it's like DMing, really.

Canonically she's an Architect, and a good one, but she could also easily be a Mark, or a Tourist if she's still learning things.

She could be a client or a mark fairly easily, the same way she could be an Extractor. I'm just saying, she's flexible and she has money.

Shade for sure (though on team Starblaster I reckon she was an Architect, unless Taako was building, in which case she was probably running Point)

Honestly he's probably a Mark, but I could see him as an Extractor with the right team to back him up.

He's a very particular kind of Extractor and Architect, and occasionally a Forger simply out of necessity.

He's an Extractor/Forger combo, good at either sweet talking his way into information or getting it through more vigorous means. Felix could also very much be a (very hostile) Shade...

Okay I know it's stupid-fucking-early where you are but
How the HELL do you deal with the hoverers?
You know, the clients who are SURE you're going to poison them even if you've LITERALLY never done that before but they're HOVERING so now you're starting to consider doing it on purpose?

[Which is a pretty specific situation, she's aware, but if anyone in their particular line of work has had the same problem, she's reasonably sure it's him.]
yeahmagnets: (crossed arms (late))

[personal profile] yeahmagnets 2023-02-21 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, i hate that. i just tell 'em so.

somethin like "if you're close enough for me to hear you breathing i can't concentrate, and if i can't concentrate there's a chance i'll fuck up and put you to sleep forever"

usually makes 'em leave me alone.
inkedchemist: (doing science on it)

[personal profile] inkedchemist 2023-02-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I did tell him if he was THAT concerned he could do it himself.
Which worked for a while.
Worst part is I've worked with the guy before, he wasn't like this then.
yeahmagnets: (serious)

[personal profile] yeahmagnets 2023-02-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, maybe upping the ante'll make him think twice.

maybe he tried to go the cheaper route and got screwed; had a bad time. i always tell my clients you get what you pay for, but some of 'em gotta learn from experience. some people think they know best just 'cause they're the ones with the cash. like it gives 'em the right to tell us how to work.

Considering that I'm the second Chemist to the job? You might be just about spot fucking on with that one.
And definitely makes more sense than my initial theory which was that this is the evil twin.
Or maybe a pod person.
Anyway, time for me to try some good old-fashioned malicious compliance once he starts micromanaging again.
yeahmagnets: (its the bomb (early))

pod people lol. sounds like you been watching too much sci-fi. though when i was growin' up i'd say the same thing if you told me we'd be able to engineer dreams someday. the subconscious is fuckin' nuts. still can't believe this is my job sometimes.

stay strong, yo. you got this. we were hired for a reason and that reason's we know what the fuck we're doing. they'd never let us near anybody if we didn't.

this is probably because i'm living offa coffee and prayers at the moment, but i forgot what you said your name was. i'm jesse...dunno if you remembered or not. unfortunately forgetfulness comes with the territory. we're the ones who gotta stay awake and oversee everything while everyone else gets a nice nap in.

[personal profile] inkedchemist 2023-03-01 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hey now, don't knock the classic sci-fi, it's part of the reason we've got the jobs we've got. At least y'know, in theory. Definitely the ideas had something to do with it.
Classic sci-fi writers had such high hopes for us as a species, they really did. Sometimes I feel bad for disappointing them and sometimes I remember that I'm doing shit they couldn't even dream of.

Name's Pixel, and considering that you're in my contacts as 'J-Dog' that means we either worked the Stenway job together, or we both worked for McCalhen once upon a time, and I hope it's the first one because seriously NOBODY should be working with McCalhen.
